sitting in a Denny's in Palo Alto. trying to write this polisci paper, but let's not lie, not trying that hard. i am thinking that everywhere in this country there are people sitting in Denny's, also waiting for inspiration. i've got this chocolate milkshake, and a computer, and a couple of friends. over there they've got cool hats and a little strained silence. a year a and a half later, i am nowhere near used to it.

in 1 week i will be on my way to new orleans
in 3 months i will be home
in 5 months i will be at victoria falls with selena
in 6 months i will be in DC
tomorrow i will be done with this paper

i rediscovered that i had a blog last night. Big news=i am going to be a history major, i just got an ipod, i am going to south africa for the summer. now to procrastinate,

anatomy of an all-nighter:

6:37pm--sit down to write the paper
7:32pm--actually open the word document
8:45pm--my introduction is 2 pages long and contains 3 theses
9:20pm--i sucked it up and picked one, then got my blanket and some more tea.
9:52:pm--the article i am arguing against cite's my professor's book. great.
10:00pm--12 hours and 8 pages to go. this is not so bad.
11:01pm--i definitely did not write 2 pages last hour.
12:24am--i am going to go to bed by 4. absolutely. no later. 5 pages to go. listening to Radiohead.
1:05am--despair. less than 9 hours and i am not even half done. and getting tired.
1:45am--since U been gone, i can breathe for the first tiiiiiiiiiime
2:54am--this picture that i found of ruth bader ginsburg is unbelievably funny
4:22am--time for a nap
7:18am--back to the grind
7:40am--this isn't as bad as i thought. just a little short.
8:43am--i have to cite...everything?
9:01am--DONE, 59 minutes early. time for breakfast.

Now it is Tuesday!

as much as i like talking about our gay friends, that isn't why we came to the FDR estate.

i had one of those weekends that makes it really hard to concentrate on what's next or imagine what just happened. but you do it anyway.

Today I officially quit my internship, and I am leaving New York in a few hours. So. Some bests and worsts:

best book: Hop on Pop in Mandarin (a little boy was reading it out loud to his mom).
worst tv show: friends. I watched two entire seasons while I was sick over the past few days.
best subway moment: this guy sang "what a wonderful world" to another guy who was crying. actually it was pretty sad.
worst subway moment: rats.

i think i like moving. it is hard to sit still with purpose.

trying to make molehills out of mountains
building base camp at the bottom of a really big deal.

In New York for a little more than a week now. It is dirty and hot, in not the good way. If you want to know more about my job, or what I have been doing with myself, ask me.

"Part of the problem [of the proliferation of Muslim extremists] is that Islam doesn't have a Pope. So there isn't one guy who can say, `This isn't kosher.'"
--Newsweek columnist Fareed Zakaria, on the July 20 edition of The Daily Show.

been home a week and a half now. home is like floating underwater.
i like errands and reading and singing in traffic
i don't like not having a clearly defined objective that has to be achieved RIGHT NOW.

slapstick!

this melancholy that i carry makes me feel so grown up
at the kitchen table doing shots of resignation
i never thought i'd see the day when i would say i give up
and break the stallions of my wildest expectations
